cartography (noun) - the study or practice of making maps

The second album by the London-based electronic artist, which releases on 31 July, explores themes of journey, landscape, and the exploration of unmapped spaces.

More expansive, pared-down and reflective than 2019's 'Plateau', the new album comprises a series of soundscapes intended to evoke the serenity of unexplored space and the clarity of the glimpsed.

Orchestral and organic tones combine with nuanced synthesized textures to create a deeply enigmatic, soft-edged mood, evoking distant untraveled vistas, murky ocean depths, or shimmering heat-haze.

The album's title was inspired by a review of the artist's debut EP by Lee Ashworth of louderthanwar.com, which claimed '...distilling and yet transcending the current moment of ambient electronica, Outside the Glitch are cartographers of a mysterious Terra Nova and this subtle soundscape retraces their steps.'

Speaking about the new album, Outside the Glitch said:

'The original plan was for a much darker, angrier album than our previous releases – a reaction to the troubled times we're living through. But it quickly became clear that the project was insisting on a very different approach for itself, and that there was much more value and depth in the direction it wanted to lead us.

'Cartography is ambiguous and primordial and spiritual and that's its strength. It's an attempt to rise above or climb out of the quagmire of these shitty times – to jump the border wall and run. It's escape into unmapped space as an act of rebellion – it's outside the glitch.'
