about

We made this album to celebrate zine culture. In lockdown one of the main ways we connected with individuals and communities was by getting zines. Small, home-made, lo-fi magazines that you can’t usually buy in your local paper shop. Unmediated communication from people with something to say. We recalled Marshall McLuhan’s statement “The Medium is the Message”. That took us on to Marshall and Eric McLuhan’s ‘Laws of Media’ and we used that to think about zines. We asked some of the most interesting zinemakers we read, and they sent us some thoughts, which we included in our sonic evocation, analysis and celebration of zine culture. We were looking at Octavia E. Butler’s ‘Lilith’s Brood’ and thought about its earlier title: Xenogenesis. We said it out loud. We had our title Zineogenesis.

“Laws of Media”

Marshall and Eric McLuhan say that every media:

Enhances something, can flip something into something else, retrieves something from the past and makes something obsolescent.

Our starting point with zines was this:

ENH: - COMMUNITY, THE INDIVIDUAL VOICE.

FLP: - PODCAST, “AN ORDINARY MAGAZINE”.

RET: - THE WRITTEN WORD. THE ILLUSTRATION. ANTICIPATION OF SOMETHING ARRIVING THROUGH THE POST.

OBS: - THE ‘FAN’ AS ‘CONSUMER’ WITH NO VOICE. THE ‘EXPERT COMMENTATOR’.

Track “listing”:

1. ENHANCE (WITH JAN STŐVER)

2. FLIP (WITH ANDY WOOD)

3. RETRIEVE (WITH BEN RICKETTS)

4. OBSOLESCE(WITH JEAN McEWAN).

SUGGESTION: only play these tracks in 1-4 order once at most. The numbering is a device. Better, use random or shuffle play every time you listen to the album.

GIDOUILLE ARE:

KATH TYLDESLEY: THERAMIN, MOOG MODEL D, KORG KAOSS PAD.

MIKE TYLDESLEY: SAXES, FLUTES, KORG KAOSS PAD AND KAOSSILATOR. BASTLE MICRO-GRANNY, FM3 BUDDHA MACHINE PHILIP GLASS 80.

JAN STŐVER: VOICE, ARTWORK.
