about

poem for seasons and cycles

a coloured pencil flash
back to after dark after
lights out

blind compositions feel
the forms of surrealist scenes
automatic drawing elongates
distorts with biomorphic scrawls
scribbles and markings
of things seen and scarred

jupiter swims to rome in ‘57
see the lower right corner
scratches into oil and wax
a swan all swirling zig-zags
colliding with shocking pinks

plumes of graffiti hearts dive
through a slanted window of seduction
a whirlpool of paradox
a myth of chaos
draining the earthly divine
splashing feathers fast

dust from roman crayons
catch in dancing pondweed
snap like cracking eggshell
and expels helen’s first breath

hung in bilbao the lead
pencil is assassinated
bleeds with a frenzy
of red yellows and pinks

within the loose grid of violence
another empire dies
the victor and the vanquished
commodus faces the consequences
a rise above frailty and fallout
floating down a long empty past

untitled house paint
covered by handwriting
drills are caught in spiral motion
the continuous flow of marks
repetitive loops and scrawls
and rhythmic glow
enlighten frantically
as if summoning logos
or da vinci's notebooks
and tumultuous floods of history

in depicting different seasons
bright red and yellow over lighter
whites is nature’s renewal
shards of poetry etched in
to stems leaves and blossom
blooms as egyptian rowboats pass
by with the dead

see six panels of peonies bursting
with vibrancy and speaking with half
a heart in japan see
the blossom motif and edo screens
the flower is power and contemplation

scratches lesser seen in the pentimento
yet words scrawled by hand remain
integral to a growing samurai haiku
a message of peace the peonies
for which kusunoki took off armour
we too should lay aside ours
for moments of joy

deep red blossoms float calmly
authoritatively against bright sun
cut not by hand but the edges
of the frame yet witness hints
of disintegration loops
wax and wane and transient
blushed stems
part of the cycle
narrated on wood and
remains untitled

memories of saints island
december 1979 melt
into translucent pallid pools
and scratchy pastel scrawls
daubs of impasto
a looping cursive focus
pulsating energy
rejection of tradition
souvenirs of slapdash haste

I always went to the sea
met barthes in paris

no surface no matter
is always and already asper
discontinuous uneven and rhyming
with accidents

the combination of the grain smudges
the interlace of tracings
diagrams
words
that embrace chance

a recurring oscillation
between vacancy and engagement
a melancholy dialect
smaller variants and derivations
stop non time stop

a horizon registers metaphorical space
of cloud where orpheus is less
character than dwelling
attaining a reverie
a dilation of psyche
with access to the inner life
of the child and the radical
melancholy of adults

an antecedence of being is
born of demythification and becomes
designated by the scrawled name
