Austin Potter's debut album under his own name joins gentle country-tinged music with poetic reveries that situate cosmic concerns inside the minute details of a dreamlike world that lives only within the minutes of the run-time. It's a brief set of songs, but the instruments here move languidly, winding around themselves - a mandolin walks hand-in-hand with an acoustic guitar while pedal steel swirls behind them like a balmy summer breeze. Lonesome harmonica that wouldn't sound out of place on an old Sons of the Pioneers record drifts in and out of the scene. Potter never sings on this album - his economical, vital words are spoken in a close whisper. He speaks of quiet nights, days on the beach, seasons that come and go, loneliness and love - but flowing underneath it all is a sense of idealism - not some simplistic nostalgia for a reductive idea of a past that never was, rather an inclusive vision of a better way of being where we live up to Love's ideals, in balance with the immutable cycles of the universe. There is nothing to fear in the Quiet City, so long as we have each other.
