The 1940s and 1950s were a boom time for the creation of industrial, human relations, classroom training and social guidance films in the USA. Organisations such as Burton Holmes Films Inc and Coronet Instructional Media Inc helped shoot and distribute documentary shorts for a developing post World War II society. Film subjects were wide-ranging and included zoology, science, geography, history and mathematics, but many had a more social focus and included guidance topics such as dating, family life, courtesy and citizenship.

Film makers and directors such as Burton Holmes, Ted Peshak and Henry Strauss also recognised a need to provide vocational guidance and inspiration for young post-depression workers. The film series ‘Your Life Work’, produced by Vocational Guidance Films Inc is one such example, with shorts designed to inform young people about job responsibilities in a variety of careers.

The films sampled here can be found on the Prelinger Archives, an expansive collection of US Cultural History founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. The archive’s goal is to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to over 60,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films. Many of the films are now in the public domain with physical films now held in the US Library of Congress. The digital archive can be accessed on the Internet Archive site (archive.org/details/prelinger).

Great record. wears it's influences proudly ..but retains a sliver of identity that is uniquely British and has a northern feel to it..I think that these geographic musical vignettes are realy evocotive of northern Newtown Uber estates and satellite communities..I hope this translates to a wider audience for him...he deserves the attention. give him his due .NOW . christopherogley
